The Process
A brief overview of the process is as follows. Whole or scrap
tires are received at the pyrolysis plant. Tires are shredded into
1 inch by 2 inch pieces. These small pieces are transported on
a series of conveyor belts that are magnetically charged to remove
excess steel particles.
After the loose steel has been removed, the small chunks are conveyed
into the processing vessel through a series of airlocks and are
depolymerized by heating them in the absence of oxygen.
The highly controlled and computer regulated process involves,
simultaneously, a solid phase reaction, and a vapor phase reaction
(thermal cracking). This results in a hydrocarbon vapor and un-milled
carbon black.
The carbon black is milled to produce carbon
black particles of
selected particle size. The milled carbon black is then screened
to remove contaminants. This refined carbon black product has been
examined under a scanning electron microscope at a magnification
of one million times. No structural differences from virgin carbon
black could be determined.
The vapor or gas produced in the process is passed through a cyclone
and bag filter. The lighter hydrocarbons are utilized as fuel for
plant operations, and the heavier hydrocarbons are condensed into
a liquid that is marketed as specialized premium grade
chemical processing oil referred to as extender oil or plasticizer oil.
The refining processes use equipment and materials that have been
long employed in the cosmetics and refining businesses.
Demand for our products is currently strong because of increased
requirements by manufacturers to incorporate the use of ‘recycled
materials’. The annual domestic market for carbon black is
approximately 4.0 billion pounds of which 2.0 billion pounds is
for high quality N326 grade blacks. Our process will produce carbon
black which when tested meets the specifications for N326.
For every six pounds of carbon black used in plastics or rubber
compounding, a gallon of plasticizer oil is required. Annual U.
S. production of plasticizer oil is 300 million gallons. The process
will produce plasticizer oil with properties of ASTM 104A solvent
oil.
The Toner Black Process consists of three successive processing
steps:
- Removal of sulfur from the Carbon Black
- Removal
of zinc oxide and other metal oxides
- Blending or compounding
of purified carbon black with the binder resin, a charge
control agent, flow control agents,
and magnetite
(black iron oxide) to produce: FINISHED TONER BLACK
